How to Use Tallow Balm on Your Face: A Beginner’s Guide

Tallow balm is concentrated skincare. It is not a watery moisturiser designed to vanish into your face by the fistful.
Use too much and you may feel like a well-basted Christmas roast. Use the right amount, on properly prepared skin, and a tiny jar can deliver months of deeply nourishing care.
Here is exactly how to use tallow balm on your face, how much you need and how to build a complete Carnivore Origins ritual around it.
Step 1: Begin with clean skin
Start by gently cleansing your face to remove makeup, sunscreen, sweat and the general debris of being alive.
Avoid aggressively scrubbing or cleansing until your face feels tight. Clean skin should feel comfortable, not punished.
If your face is already clean in the morning, a splash of water or botanical hydrosol may be all you need.
Step 2: Leave your skin slightly damp
Tallow balm contains no water, so it works beautifully when applied to skin that is still slightly damp.
After cleansing, lightly mist your face with a hydrosol or pat on a small amount of water. Your skin should feel fresh and lightly damp, not dripping wet.
This gives the balm a little moisture to work with and helps such a small amount spread comfortably across the face.
Step 3: Use far less tallow than you think
Begin with an amount somewhere between a grain of rice and half a pea.
Warm it between clean fingertips until it melts, then gently press and massage it across your face and neck.
You can always add another tiny amount to dry areas. Trying to remove half a cow from your forehead is considerably less elegant.
Tallow balm should leave your skin feeling soft, nourished and comfortable. If your face remains extremely shiny or greasy after several minutes, you have probably used too much.
How often should you use tallow balm?
You can use tallow balm morning, evening or both.
If you are new to tallow skincare, begin once daily, preferably at night. This gives you time to learn how much your skin prefers without worrying about makeup or rushing out the door.
Once you know how your skin responds, adjust the amount and frequency to suit your routine.
How to choose the right tallow balm
There is no single balm for every face, mood and stage of life.
Choose according to what your skin needs:
Natural Unscented Tallow Balm offers simple, no-fuss nourishment for people who prefer to avoid added scent.
Botanical Babe combines gentle herbal infusions without essential oils and is a beautiful starting point for sensitive or easily overwhelmed skin.
SOS Save Our Skin is our hard-working herbal balm for skin that feels weathered, rough or thoroughly fed up.
Fit for a Queen is a rich daily ritual created for dry, mature or depleted-feeling skin.
You can also explore the complete range of Carnivore Origins tallow balms to find your ideal formula.

Cushion your tallow ritual with Restorative Elixir
For skin that wants more softness, slip and botanical nourishment, layer Restorative Elixir underneath your tallow balm.
Restorative Elixir is a tallow-free botanical oil serum made with mugwort-infused jojoba, cucumber seed oil, rosehip oil and castor oil. It contains no essential oils or added fragrance.
After cleansing and misting:
Apply one pump of Restorative Elixir to slightly damp skin.
Press it over the face, neck and décolletage.
Allow it to settle briefly.
Follow with a tiny amount of your chosen tallow balm.
The Elixir creates a silky, cushioning layer. The tallow follows to seal everything in with a richer finish.
If your skin is particularly dry, use both morning and evening. If it prefers a lighter routine, use the Elixir during the day and add tallow at night.

Complement your tallow balm with Bright Eyes
Your eye area does not necessarily need the same formula or quantity as the rest of your face.
Bright Eyes Eye Balm is formulated specifically for the thin, delicate skin around the eyes using infused grass-fed tallow, eyebright, chamomile, frankincense, cucumber seed oil, jojoba and castor oil.
After applying Restorative Elixir:
Use a tiny amount of Bright Eyes around the orbital bone.
Pat gently with your ring finger rather than dragging the skin.
Avoid placing the balm directly inside the eye area.
Continue with your facial tallow balm, avoiding unnecessary overlap.
Keep Bright Eyes in the fridge if you enjoy a cool morning application. The chilled stick feels bloody glorious on tired-looking eyes.
Finish with Tallow Zinc Barrier Balm
When you want a more substantial final layer, finish with Tallow Zinc Barrier Balm.
The balm combines grass-fed tallow, beeswax, botanical oils and non-nano zinc oxide to create a physical barrier over the skin. It is available in white and tinted options.
Apply your skincare first, then allow the earlier layers to settle. Glide or press a light layer of Zinc Barrier Balm onto clean, dry skin wherever extra barrier support is wanted. Blend gently and reapply as desired.
The order is:
Cleanse
Hydrosol or damp skin
Restorative Elixir
Bright Eyes
Tallow balm
Zinc Barrier Balm
Important: Carnivore Origins Tallow Zinc Barrier Balm is not SPF rated and is not marketed as sunscreen. It should not replace a regulated sun-protection product.
A simple morning tallow routine
Your morning routine can be beautifully brief:
Rinse or cleanse gently.
Mist with hydrosol.
Apply Restorative Elixir if desired.
Apply Bright Eyes.
Press a tiny amount of tallow balm into the face and neck.
Allow everything to settle.
Finish with Zinc Barrier Balm where wanted.
If wearing makeup, give the balm several minutes to settle first. If your makeup slips, reduce the amount of tallow rather than abandoning the entire ritual in a rage.
A deeply nourishing evening ritual
At night:
Remove makeup and cleanse gently.
Leave the skin slightly damp or apply hydrosol.
Press in Restorative Elixir.
Apply Bright Eyes around the orbital bone.
Seal with your chosen tallow balm.
Take the balm down the neck and across the décolletage. Any remaining product on your fingertips can be massaged into your hands, cuticles or other dry areas.
Nothing wasted. The cow would approve.
Common tallow balm mistakes
Using far too much
More tallow does not mean more nourishment. Begin with a tiny amount and build only where needed.
Applying it to completely dry skin
Slightly damp skin helps the balm spread and creates a more comfortable finish.
Introducing several formulas at once
If your skin is sensitive or reactive, introduce one new product at a time and patch test first.
Expecting it to feel like a water cream
Tallow balm is dense, concentrated and water-free. It should feel different because it is different.
Storing it in heat or direct sunlight
Keep your balm closed, cool and out of direct sunlight. Natural temperature changes may soften or firm the texture without affecting its quality.
How long does tallow balm take to absorb?
A correctly measured amount should begin settling within several minutes. Richer skin may absorb it quickly, while oilier skin may prefer a smaller amount or nighttime-only use.
Your skin, the weather and the products underneath will all affect the finish.
Can you use tallow balm every day?
Yes. Tallow balm can be used daily when the formula suits your skin.
Consistency matters more than smothering your face in a heroic quantity once a week. Use a little, pay attention and let your skin tell you what it prefers.
Ready to begin?
Start with clean, slightly damp skin. Use less balm than you think. Build your ritual gradually and choose products that suit your actual skin rather than whatever the internet has diagnosed you with this week.
